Dance is one of the most ancient arts in Indian culture.Dance brings a energetic mindset. One dances to express his differents feelings and moods. It can be joy , sorrow , happiness , devotion and so on. Dance is something that bring a difference in our mood for a second.Classical dance Forms are an evergreen culture.

Even dance are of different types . There are various different types of dancers .

I know  you will think what am I saying .If dances are of different types, then dancers will obviously different.

But I am not talking about that . I am talking about like-

  • Any talent show, proper dance WITH DISCIPLINE
  • free time , one dance in the he want
  • front of crowd ,everyone cannot dance ,thatโ€™s reality

Dance have various forms . But as an art , it couldnโ€™t be taken lightly. The Indian classical dances are not easy discipline . The artists has to go under rigourous trainings .

Lets discuss about classical dance in some more detail .

CLASSICAL DANCE

BHARATMUNI NATYASHASTRA = CONSIDERED AS EARLIEST TREATIES ON DANCE. BELIEVED THAT LORD BRAHMA CREATED A PAST TIME .BY INCORPORATING DIFFERENT ELEMENTS FROM EXISTING FOUR VEDAS. THIS CREATION CALLED AS NATYAVEDA.

 As ,

                                    Pathya  ( words ) from =Rigveda

                                  Abhinaya (Drama) from = Yajurveda

                                  Geet (Music) from = Samveda

                                  Rasa ( emotions )from = Atharvaveda

Also believed that Lord Brahma has instructed Bharata Muni .To codify rules of Indian Classical Dance Forms.

There are three elements of Classical Dance :

1.Mritta  ( pure dance moment )

2. Natya  (expression moment )

3. Nritya   (expression by whole dancing)

VARIOUS CLASSICAL DANCE FORMS

Now lets discuss some types of classical dance forms :

   1.BHARATNATYAM

  • Oldest form among Indian classical dance
  • Name derived from โ€œBhav , Raag and Taal โ€œ.
  • However , few scholars attribute the name to Bharat Muni
  • Originated from temple
  •  It traces its footprint from Devdasi system.
  • Since, performed by daasi , thus also called DASSI ATTAM .
  • Most elaborated form
  • Consists of seven steps :
  •   ALARIPU
  •  JAATISWARAM
  • SHABDAM
  • VARNAM
  • PADM
  • JAWALI
  • THILLANA
  • Also called fire dance .
  • Major feature is the use of MUDRA
  • Famous Dancers :-
  •  YAMINI KRISHNAMURTY
  • PADMA SUBRAMANYAM
  • MRINALINI SARABHAI
  • MALLIKA SARABHAI
  •  Instrument used :-
  •  Violin
  • Flute
  • Mridangam

         2. KUCHIPUDI

  •  Originally performed by group of actors . Those actors went from village to village (known as  KUSHANIWAS )
  •  This dance form became monopole of male Brahamins . It was due to advent of  Vaishnavisam.
  •  Stories of Bhagwatapuran became the central theme .
  •  Dance gained prominence under patronage of Vijaynagar and Golkunda rulers .
  • Element manisfested = EARTH.
  • In this , many dancers used to do singing also.
  • Some solo elements of this dance form :

1. Manduk shabhdam

2. Tarangam

3.Tala chitra natyam

  • Famous Dancers :-
  • RAJA & RADHA RIDDU
  • YAMINI KRISHNAMURTY
  • INDRANI REHMANI
  • RUKMINI DEVI ARUNDALE
  • Accompanied with Carnatic music.
  •  Instrument used :

1. MRIGANDHAM

2. VIOLIN

         3. KATHAKALI

  • Kathakali emerge from theratical traditions of kerala.
  • It came out as a particular dance format .
  • Kathakali = Katha = Stories
  • Emerged from temples .Where stories of Ramayana and Mahabharta frequently distributed.
  • Shows eternal conflict between evil and God.
  • Very difficult kind of dancing : where strainess training required.
  • Due to its difficulty and elegance , also called Ballet of East .
  • Use of props is minimal in this dance form.
  • Facial makeup show nature of character on the stage.
  • Different colours used to show characters of dancers.
  • Always performed in open air stage .
  • Element attributed : AIR or SKY
  • Accompanied with Sopana music of kerala
  • Instrument used :
  • CHENDA
  • MADDALA
  • ILATHALAM
  • SANKHU
  • Famous dancers :
  • GURU KUNCHU KURUP
  • RITA GANGILA

       4 .MOHINIATTAM

  • A solo dance performed mainly by females .
  • Particular format inspired from event of SAMUNDRAMANTHAN
  • Many instances inspired from Bharatnatyam
  • Virgour of dance inspired from Kathakali.
  •  There are 40 basic steps = โ€œ ATTAVAKUL โ€
  • Most important part= COSTUME
  • COSTUME = white saree with golden brocade  + gajra on hair
  •  Element attributed = AIR
  •  Famous Dancers :
  • SUNANDA NAIR
  • JAYPRABHA MENON
  • HEMA MALINI
  • MADHURI AMMA
  •  MOHINIATTAM = DANCE OF ATTIRES

      5. ODISSI

  •   Patronised by Jain Khravela
  •  Mahari system give rise to Odissi
  • After this system , two more systems are here : Navtala and Gotipa
  • In terms of Mudra , it is closer to Bharatnatyam
  •  Important Postures :
  • TRIBANGH =tribent form of body
  • CHALK =  Tries to imitate shape of square through use of legs .
  •  This dance form : also known as MOBILE SCULPTURE
  • Element attributed = WATER
  • Famous dancers :
  • GURU PANKAJ DAS
  • GURU KELUCHARAN MAHAPATRA
  • SONAL MANN SINGH
  • SHARON LOWEN
  • MYTRA BAVRE
